Fort Raleigh - The Lost Colony
The site of the first attempt by the English to colonize the new world. English colonists led by Sir Walter Raleigh landed on Roanoke Island, in Dare County, North Carolina in 1584. In 1588, when supply ships returned to the site, there was no trace of the colonists and no indication of foul play. The English first permanent settlement was in Jamestown, Virginia.
