  • Every credit card offer has an "opt-out" number. Call it to rid your mailbox of credit card offers for up to five years. Call 1-888-567-8688 or log on to www.optoutprescreen.com.
  • Eliminate telemarketing calls by registering your home phone and your cell phone numbers with the National Do Not Call Registry online at https://donotcall.gov/ or by calling 1-999-382-1222.
  • The law entitles you to a FREE credit report every year from each of three credit reporting agencies. Spread your requests out and order one every four months. Look for accounts you did not open. The three nationwide consumer reporting companies have a central Web site and a toll-free number. Order your reports from www.annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228.
  • OnGuardOnline.gov: Learn practical tips related to wireless security, laptop use, spyware, malware, investing online, VoIP, P2P file sharing, and more.
  • If your private information has been compromised, 1) contact the three credit reporting agencies immediately (1-877-322-8228), 2) close suspect accounts, and 3) file complaints with the police and Federal Trade Commission. Learn more at www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/.
  • Shred any personally identifiable papers that come into your home.
  • Never respond to unsolicited emails or phone calls requesting confidential information.
  • When you close a bank or credit card account, put your request in writing.
