Week 17: Using or Creating a Spreadsheet/
Using Primary Source Materials
Homework
for the Teacher
Students
began an online simulated shopping spree activity last week in preparation
for using a spreadsheet to perform calculations and observe results.
The spreadsheet they will download or create today will help them
stay within a budgeted amount while making their imaginary purchases.
Since
students have practiced using spreadsheets for several weeks
now, it would benefit them more to create the "shopping
order form" toy spreadsheet from scratch. You could allow
students to open and study the formulas in one of the spreadsheet
templates provided in Step 2 before they attempt to create their
own spreadsheet. Objective 2.8 in the North Carolina Computer/Technology
Skills 5th Grade Strand states the students should, "Create/modify
and use spreadsheets to perform calculations."
Remember
to monitor students closely and caution them not to
submit an ID or password for the purchase of an item on any commercial
Web site.
Work
with students to focus on studying details
to form a hypothesis while they are engaged with Mission
4 on the TechKnow
Time Warp page.
Reading
Strategy Spotlight
Question! Have
students ask questions of themselves, questions of the authors, and
questions regarding the validity of text. Questioning is fundamental
to being alive. Questions help children formulate beliefs. What questions
do they have before they start to read? What questions rise to the
surface while they are reading? What questions would they like to
ask the author? What questions will go unanswered?
