Week 12: Boolean Logic (NOT), Using Word Processing Skills
1 What's Up?
Get warmed up to shoot a few Boolean baskets this week by discussing these statements with a friend:
IF the FunHouse is open all weekend, I will be able to play in it on Saturday but NOT on Sunday because we have other plans on Sunday. THEN I know I will have the chance to play in the FunHouse at least once this weekend at TechKnow Park. (Turn it into a search statement: Saturday NOT Sunday )

IF
you order pizza, get pepperoni AND sausage, but NOT onions on mine. (Turn it into a search statement: pepperoni AND sausage NOT onions )

Use the words in red to create a logic statement of your own.

Let’s continue this week’s study of Boolean logic by playing around with the operator NOT. As you know, learning to use Boolean operators (like AND, OR, NOT) for keyword searches will make your information gathering efforts more productive.

2 Let the fun Begin!
Today you will learn to use the Boolean operator NOT. Here is an example to get you started:
If you’re interested in rockets, but not bottle or model rockets, you could type this as a search statement: rocket NOT bottle NOT model

Now for a fun lesson and an opportunity to practice using this operator in NC WiseOwl - link to The Surfer’s Suitcase and click on the sticker labeled NOT.

Stay in the Surfer’s Suitcase and explore the last two stickers on Wildcards and Case (upper or lower).

Conduct a few Serendipitous Searches with the WiseSurprise Owl for practice using the Boolean operator NOT.

3 MUYOM - Make Up Your Own Mind
Last week, you made changes to your word processing file and gave it a title. Open this same file again and consider the two items at the very top of your file. (It should have been saved under your name.) Look down the list at the other things you named.

It’s time to make a choice between your two absolute favorites at the top of the file. Which one do you spend the most time thinking about and doing? Which one do you enjoy the most? Delete all the other items in your list and leave your final choice at the top. Remember to SAVE the changes under the very same name you started with.Good! Now grab a sheet of paper and take 3 minutes to brainstorm every single word you can think of that is related to your final choice. Write as fast as you can, recording every thought. Use both big juicy words and very specific details. Let one idea link you to another idea, like you’re playing chain tag with words.Join with a partner at the end of 3 minutes and talk about your list. Let your partner help you think of other words to go in your list. It is okay to add to your list after talking with your partner.

Finally, enter your list on the file you started a few weeks ago and SAVE it again. Once it’s saved, PRINT a copy. You’re going to do some exciting things next week with your list. Don’t lose it!

Sneak a peek at another fifth grader’s #1 choice and his brainstormed list to go with it. He changed his title. You can too, if you like.
