Using
the BIG6
Assignment Organizer to Plan for Multimedia
Big6 Section
#1: Task Definition
What
am I supposed to do?
Think about your research topic
(the topic that interests you most) and the information you have gathered
throughout the year. Also, start thinking about the best way to organize
your research information to make it easy for others to understand.
What
information do I need in order to do this?
- You will need all the sources containing
the notes you have taken, the pictures you have collected, the interviews
you have recorded. Get the idea? Maybe you have a collection of note
cards, diskettes with files, lists of Web sites and their bookmarks,
interviews with experts, videos, CDs, books, etc.
- Next week, you will use Graphic
organizers and/or software
like Kidspiration or Inspiration to make organizing your thoughts
much easier and to make BIG plans for your product! How exciting!
- Multimedia resources suggested in the
TK Multimedia Diner.
At the Diner you will find links to Web sites containing amazing
copyright-friendly clip art, photos, sounds, animation and movies.
(You
dont need to fill
in all 10 blanks.)

#2: Information Seeking Strategies
What
are the best sources I can use to find this information?
- Since
you have already gathered the information on your topic, you will
be looking for multimedia sources to create
a product that will benefit others, right? So the first source
to check out is the TK
Multimedia Diner!
- The following people will be able to help
you identify resources that are available locally: School Media Specialist
and/or computer teacher, Classroom Teacher, Public Library Assistant,
family, friends and local experts.
If using
Web sites, how will I know that they are good enough for my project?
You can place a check in the first box because the TK
Multimedia Diner contains links to only those sites that
have been evaluated and are known to be safe and copyright-friendly.
(as of May, 2002)
You can place a check in the
second box because you will be working with the people listed in the
last question.
Big6 Section
#3: Location & Access
Where will I find these sources?
Your teacher and media/technology
specialist can help you locate all the multimedia resources available
in your school, home and community.
Who can help me find what I need?
All of these people would
be more than happy to help you.
Big6 Section
#4: Use of Information
How will I record the information that
I find?
Since you have already
gathered the information on your topic and have it recorded in a variety
of ways, the next task is to start organizing it by using graphic organizers,
sketching flowcharts, creating storyboards, illustrating big concepts
and key ideas, and creating new multimedia sources with a digital or
video camera. Check the boxes that apply to the project you have in mind.
How will I give credit to my sources?
The two links provided
on the Big6 Assignment Organizer contain information that show how to
give credit to your sources. The two links are Classroom
Connect and the Quick
Guide.

#5: Synthesis
How will I show my results?
Next week, you will use
a fun tool called, Multimedia, MI Way (MI stands for Multiple
Intelligence) to select a product idea that appeals to you most!
The product idea that you select will determine how you show or present
your information to others. Start dreaming about the type of product
you would like to create, then check the boxes that apply to you. Dont
think about the traditional reports you have done in the past. Let
these ideas (by TOSA Web) stir up new and different ways of
thinking.
"To have knowledge and skills is to
be responsible. In a democracy, if we dont take action to correct
problems or social ills, who will? Educating others is a major responsibility
of us all." (Susan J. Kovalik and Karen D. Olsen,
Exceeding Expectations: A Users Guide to Implementing Brain Research
in the Classroom)
How will I give credit to my sources
in my final product or performance?
You can list your sources in
a variety of ways:
- as a written or typed bibliography
- on the last slide of a multimedia show
- as rolling credits at the end of an iMovie
or video
- announced at the end of a radio show
- taped to the bottom of a diorama OR to
the back of an exhibit OR inside a puppet theatre
- The possibilities are endless. . . Dream
BIG!
Important: In addition to the bibliography
or list of sources at the end of your presentation, always attach a short
credit to the image, sound, animation or movie, wherever it appears in
your product.
The two links provided on the Big6 Assignment
Organizer contain information that show how to give credit to your sources.
The two links are Classroom
Connect and the Quick
Guide.
Materials I will need for my presentation
or performance:
Here are a few ideas for starters:
- Presentation software, like PowerPoint
or HyperStudio.
- Equipment to create your own original
multimedia resources: digital camera, video camera, scanner, multimedia
computer with speakers, etc.
The remaining questions deal with timelines
and evaluation. Discuss these with your teacher.
