Week 10: Introduction to Boolean Logic (AND), Using Word Processing Skills
1 What's Up?
Discuss these statements with a partner, and then create one of your own.

IF I get an allowance this week AND get permission to visit TechKnow Park,
THEN
I can buy a ticket to ride on the Jet Skis.

IF my friend gets his go-cart repaired AND he invites me over,
THEN I can ride the go-cart!

IF mom says that I can have a sleep over on Friday AND I don’t get into trouble this week,

THEN I can invite my friends to a sleep over.

Congratulations! You just worked with making real-world decisions using logic and you are well on the way to learning more advanced search methods. Now that you’ve had a lesson with your Media/Technology Specialist, you’re ready to start using Boolean logic, search engines and other information gathering tools! Once you feel comfortable with your new information-seeking skills, then you can begin applying that information and using it for locating information that you need.

2 Let the fun Begin!
This week and in the weeks ahead you will get plenty of practice telling search tools which information you need to locate on the Internet. As you know, one important skill to possess is the use of Boolean logic, which makes your searches more successful and more efficient. Without Boolean operators (like AND, OR, NOT), searching can be very frustrating and time-consuming. So, the more you know about Boolean logic, the more productive your surfing will be. By the way, a mathematician named George Boole (1815-1864) invented the foundation for this logic–quite by accident! If you want to know more, look him up in NC WiseOwl!

Today you will learn to use the Boolean operator AND. Whenever you want to do a keyword search with NC WiseOwl or a search engine, just think of it this way:

IF you type the word gorilla AND the word chimpanzee in the search box, THEN you will get a list of only those Web pages that contain BOTH words (gorilla AND chimpanzee).

Now for a fun lesson and an opportunity to practice using this operator in NC WiseOwl link to The Surfer’s Suitcase and click on the sticker labeled AND. Ignore the other stickers today. We’ll get to those in the weeks ahead.

Now that you understand how to use AND, compare it with two other Boolean operators using the unbelievable Boolean Machine, by Rockwell Schrock.

Conduct a few Serendipitous Searches with the WiseSurprise Owl using the Boolean operator AND. Oh, what surprises wait just around the corner as you journey on grand information adventures!

MUYOM - Make Up Your Own Mind
Open the file you created in Week 8. You saved it with your name as its file name. Remember, you brainstormed a list of all the things that truly interest you. Look at your list again and select two that are your absolute favorites. Boldface your two selections and make the text a different color and a different font. It’s okay to add to the list or make changes. Remember to SAVE your file several times while you’re working and, of course, at the end of class.Turn to a partner and discuss all the things that make your two special items stand out from the other items on the list. Discuss how your two selections are alike. How are they different? Discuss how it’s okay for people to have different interests, different talents and different ways of doing things. Use your minds to travel into the future for a minute. Explore all the creative ways your special talents and interests can make a difference in the lives of others.
