NC WiseOwl is divided into six separate areas: Reference, Student, Media & Technology, Teacher, Parents, and Evaluation. We'll be using four of those areas: Reference, Student, Teacher, and Parents. The student area features a variety of Web sites that relate both to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and to student interests. The Teacher area focuses on WebQuests that supplement the curriculum. The Reference area provides periodical databases, encyclopedias, and child-friendly search engines. Parents have their own area, which features Web sites that encourage them to help their children with homework and simple Internet searching. One of the highlights of NC WiseOwl is remote access. This allows parents and students to access from home all of the NC WiseOwl resources, even the periodical databases, providing they have Internet access. Students and parents can get passwords to access the subscription databases from their school library media coordinator. These resources can be accessed from any computer with Internet access - the public library, your community center, or a friend's home. While this includes the periodical databases and encyclopedias, NC WiseOwl requests that the passwords not be distributed except to the school/student community because of licensing restrictions. The use of NC WiseOwl is monitored. Unauthorized use by persons outside the state of North Carolina may result in the loss of use of NC WiseOwl for all users. And always remember that information is property.
