NC WiseOwl FAQ

REGISTRATION

Most NC LEAs are already registered, but some are not yet authenticated for all three sources that provide databases on NC WiseOwl. Network administrators can register their LEA networks for access by providing their external IP information.

For PBS videos - send IP information to our Webmaster, Dan Sparlin (dsparlin@dpi.state.nc.us). Your firewall must be configured as per the instructions at http://www.ncwiseowl.org/zones/pbs/tech.htm.

NOTE: Home access to PBS Videos does not use the standard NC WiseOwl password. Users must obtain NC LIVE login information from their local public library in order to access these videos outside of a registered school network.

For EBSCO and Gale/Cengage databases - send IP information to Dan Sparlin (dsparlin@dpi.state.nc.us).

NOTE: Your network firewall settings may prevent access to EBSCO resoures. Please consult the following information if you have registered and still do not have automatic authentication: http://support.ebsco.com/knowledge_base/detail.php?id=966

OVERVIEW
NC WiseOwl (NC Online Windows for Learning) has been providing online subscription resources for our schools for the last decade.  Our mission is to ensure that all of our public and charter school students have access to a collection of online resources for use in research projects and homework assignments, without regard to the economic status of their local school system.  NC WiseOwl has three major strengths as an educational resource:

  • Quality: Information on the Internet at-large is often unreliable and inappropriate for use in the K-12 education field.  WiseOwl’s subscription databases provide access to articles from thousands of magazines, from online encyclopedias and reference sources, and from a variety of other sources that are only available to paying customers.
  • Economy: By purchasing databases at the state level we are able to achieve an economy-of-scale that saves taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars over the cost of individual school systems purchasing the same resources.
  • Safety: The World Wide Web was never intended as a K-12 educational tool.  Using WiseOwl for online research places students in a safer, advertising-free environment with age-appropriate information and tools that assist students with the research process.

ACCESSING NC WISEOWL RESOURCES

WiseOwl resources are available anywhere that Internet access is provided.  School systems may register their networks so that no passwords are required when using school computer labs.  Passwords may be obtained from school or system-level media and/or technology personnel to permit access outside of school facilities.
