IMPACT Academies

During the grant period, the 11 IMPACT Schools meet in June for week-long academies. Each IMPACT School sends a team of five to work on an a project that they will implement during the following school year. The team consists of the principal, the media coordinator, the teachnology facilitator and two other staff members from the school. Each team is assigned a facilitator that meets with them before and during the academy.

The academies use the Authentic Task Approach. In preparation for the IMPACT Academies, SEIR*TEC, our partner for formative evaluation of the IMPACT Model, provided facilitator training to NC DPI staff. The facilitators previously participated in SEA Academies provided by SEIR*TEC for regional State Education Agency technology education staff. SEIR*TEC supports the IMPACT Academies by providing guidance to DPI staff in planning, conducting, and evaluating the academies.

Through a SEIR*TEC partnership with Learning Innovations at WestEd, Janet Phlegarand Nancy Gerzon provide leadership to the school teams through large-group sessions and customized small-group sessions. Researched-based strategies are used by Jan and Nancy to engage, challenge, and guide teams in designing unique school-based solutions to the projects presented. They use their extensive background and academy experience to assist facilitators throughout the academy.
