Media Assistant JOB DESCRIPTION
NATURE OF WORK
An employee in this class assists in the implementation of a school library media program, providing ongoing support to teachers and students (K-12) using resources in the school library media center. The employee performs routine tasks in the areas of materials, records management, and circulation. Clerical responsibilities include tasks related to ordering/receiving, maintenance, inventory, and production of instructional resources.
The employee provides hardware and software support to users of computer workstations and other equipment in the school library media center. Tasks include minor troubleshooting problems such as logging on to computer systems or software, printing malfunctions, or routine error messages. If standard techniques do not resolve the situation, the employee will seek assistance from the appropriate technical professional.
The media assistant carries out all tasks under the direction of the professional members of the school library media staff, reporting, as appropriate, to designated professionals and administrators.

- Instructional Support Responsibilities (under the supervision of the media coordinator)
- Assists students and staff with the location and use of information resources and equipment
- Follows lessons plan directives to conduct storytimes, deliver instructional activities to individual students and groups, and monitor whole group guided instruction

- Information Access and Delivery Responsibilities
- Circulates print and non-print information resources and equipment
- Organizes and maintains the periodical collection
- Assumes general clerical responsibilities
- Generates statistical reports using the library automation system
- Maintains and customizes electronic files and databases
- Assists with ordering print and non-print information resources
- Performs routine processing and cataloging of resources
- Maintains inventory of and orders supplies
- Maintains orderliness of the media center facility
- Mends books and other materials, and prepare volumes for binding when necessary
- Performs other clerical duties as assigned
- Technical Responsibilities
- Assists with keeping the online catalog current
- Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs of AV equipment
- Assists with maintaining the school library media center collection of information resources
- Provides timely resolution of computer problems by providing assistance or referral
- Assists with the media retrieval system
- Performs other technical support responsibilities as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- General knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study
- Knowledge of basic clerical procedures such as filing, sorting, organizing, and shelving
- Skill in maintaining records, inventory, and accounting
- Knowledge of word processing and other basic office applications
- General knowledge of information technology devices
- General knowledge of audiovisual equipment
- General knowledge of software packages utilized in the school library media center
- Competency in online searching
- Ability to communicate with users to determine the nature of assistance needed
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the entire school community
- Ability to solve independently most minor problems
- Ability to be accurate in work and to pay attention to details
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
All media assistants must have a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent.
Assistants in Title I funded schools who assist with instruction must have an AA degree or its equivalent, or meet one of the testing and coursework alternatives approved by the NC State Board of Education.
Experience in office clerical procedures and the use of computer and information technology resources is recommended. For non-instructional assistants and/or non-Title I schools, the school system determines the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
