Week 32: Exploring the World of Multimedia
1 What's Up?
Last week you daydreamed (with these questions) about using multimedia to turn your most favorite topic into an information product that you can share with others in your school, family, and community. Today you will begin to gather ideas and to start forming a vision for your multimedia product. Don’t worry about the final "look" of your product, though. That will come later. Right now, focus on exploring libraries of sound files, clip art, video, and animation. The adventures you have this week will help you locate some of the best sites for copyright-friendly multimedia sources! Are you ready to apply your multimedia capabilities?
2 Let the Fun Begin!
Play ‘Think Before You Link!’
Directions: Answer one question at a time, then link to the famous TK Diner and find amazing sites packed with multimedia (text, pictures, sounds, music, movies, and/or animation) that matches your answer. Read the example that accompanies each question before linking to the TK Diner.
1. The topic for my yearlong research project is ____________________ (my most favorite topic). I would like to have pictures, photographs, clip art, and/or diagrams of __________________ to show others and to use in my multimedia presentation. Link to TK Diner, pick a site listed under Fun with Photos, Images, and Clip Art, and search for pictures that have something to do with your answer. (For example, if your answer is "tornados:" 1-Pick one of the sites listed under Fun with Photos, Images, and Clip Art.
2-Type the word tornado in that site’s search box to find photos, images, and clip art.
3-View pictures of tornados.
2. It’s nice to see pictures related to my topic, but it would be even better if you could hear or listen to _____________________________ . Link to TK Diner, pick a site listed under Sounds and Sound Effects, and then search for sounds or sound effects that have something to do with your answer. (For example, if your answer is "the sound of a tornado:" 1-Pick one of the sites listed under Sounds and Sound Effects.
2-Type the word tornado in that site’s search box to find sound clips of actual tornados.
3-Listen to the different sounds of tornados.
3. It would be totally cool if I could download movies or animations that demonstrate or show ________________________________ . (something related to your yearlong research topic) Link to TK Diner, pick a site listed under Animations and Movies, and then search for movies and animations that have something to do with your answer. (For example, if your answer is "the BIGGEST tornado in history:" 1-Pick one of the sites listed under Animations and Movies.
2-Type the search phrase "biggest tornado" or "worst tornado" in that site’s search box to find actual video clips of killer tornados.
3-Download and view the clips.

3 MUYOM-Make Up Your Own Mind
MUYOM (Make Up Your Own Mind)
You must be cross-eyed from staring at all that multimedia! It’s nice to have artwork, sounds, and videos that you can use immediately, isn’t it? However, your multimedia presentation will be more meaningful if you generate your own artwork, take your own pictures, shoot your own videos, etc. Here’s an outrageously fun idea that is cheap, easy, and places YOUR very own photos right on the Web---ready to be popped into a slideshow with a few simple clicks! (We are using Wal-Mart for this particular example, but you can apply the idea to any store with a photo center.)
