Week 11: Boolean Logic (OR), Using Word Processing Skills
1 What's Up?
Start shooting Boolean HOOPS with these statements.

IF I take the jet skis across the lake to shoot baskets at HOOPS OR if I walk along the TechKnow Park path to get to the HOOPS,
THEN either way I will get the chance to shoot HOOPS and win a prize. IF my friend invites me over to play the popular new video game OR if I get the new video game at my birthday party,
THEN
either way I will get to play the coolest new video game!Use the words in red to create a logic statement of your own.Let’s continue this week’s study of Boolean logic by focusing on the operator OR. As you know, learning to use Boolean operators (like AND, OR, NOT) for keyword searches will make your information gathering efforts more productive.

(In today’s cyber-activities, can you find a silly jingle about two tiny operators called AND & OR? This little jingle is a catchy verse that can be repeated over and over again to help you remember the difference between the use of AND & OR in search statements.)

2 Let the Fun Begin!
Today you will learn to use the Boolean operator OR, along with the use of quotes in search statements. Whenever you want to do a keyword search using OR with NC WiseOwl or a search engine, just think of it this way:

IF you type the word disguise OR the word mask in the search box, THEN you will get a list of all the Web pages that contain either one of the words (only disguise OR only mask OR both words).

Now for a fun lesson and an opportunity to practice using quotes and the OR operator in NC WiseOwl link to The Surfer’s Suitcase and click on two stickers: OR and Quotes "__". Ignore the other stickers today. You will get to see the remaining stickers next week.

Now that you have a better understanding of keyword searching with OR, link to the Boolean Machine, by Rockwell Schrock, to compare OR to the other operators on the machine.

Conduct a few Serendipitous Searches with the WiseSurprise Owl to make comparisons between the Boolean operators AND & OR. Oh, what surprises wait just around the corner as you journey on grand information adventures!

3 MUYOM (Make Up Your Own Mind)
Open the file you’ve been working on the last few weeks (saved under your name). Remember that you highlighted and boldfaced 2 items from the list that were your absolute favorites.

Cut and paste the other less interesting items on the bottom of the file, leaving the two boldfaced items at the top. It’s not too late to change your mind. You can add to the list, change the two favorites or delete items. This is your personal list. Don’t let the ideas and opinions of others influence you. Make up your own mind!Give your list a title that is centered on the first line of the file.
