Week 11: Boolean Logic (OR), Using Word Processing Skills

Homework for the Teacher

  • This week your students will practice using the Boolean operator OR and using quotes in a search statement. Make sure they have the opportunity to compare OR & AND statements. Next week they will practice using NOT in search statements.
  • Students will need to open their previously saved word processing file in Step 3. Remember, the writing and word processing they do in Weeks 9-12 build a strong foundation for the ongoing research project in TechKnow Park. Please try not to skip this step. Students will eventually transform their brainstormed list of words into keyword searches for initial information gathering efforts. At the same time they will be learning to pick out main ideas and exclude the ones that are not essential to their topic.
  • By now you are probably registered with "Teach for Tomorrow." Challenge yourself this week to complete the remaining modules on the site. You’ll be glad you did!

Reading Strategy Spotlight
Where's the beef? Use conclusions about important ideas to focus students' reading and help them exclude the "unessential." Often, by pointing out what is unimportant, you help students to distinguish importance more clearly. Ask them to read and think aloud about their mental images as you guide them to distinguish between images that are critical to understanding and those little details in images that are interesting, but not essential to the purpose for reading. Students can use sensory images to lose themselves in rich detail, gain a greater depth in the reading, draw conclusions, and make text more memorable. Engaging discussion can grow from disputes over what is important. Let children work to defend their positions.
