Week 21: Using Databases

Homework for the Teacher

  • Students start today’s lesson by reviewing database terminology, then move on to guided practice exercises with two fascinating Web sites. Finally, they are released to explore a variety of high-interest databases independently. Relax, join in on the fun, and use this time to spread some laughter in the classroom.
  • The database for the Titanic passenger and crew lists provides rich background material for creative writing exercises. The facts in the database will come alive for the children once they start digging around in the data and discussing records with one another. Remind students to click on the underlined surname to view the details for each passenger.
  • When students work with technology, especially with databases, the role of the teacher shifts. View Jamie McKenzie’s thought-provoking response to the question, "How Does the Teacher Act?" in student-centered learning environments.
  • (On a Personal Note for Teachers) Thinking of retiring or moving soon? Here’s a database you can use right away: Best Places to Live, Work, Play or Retire.
Reading Strategy Spotlight
Drawing inferences in text is the process of combining what is read with relevant prior knowledge. Use this process to help students create meaning that is not necessarily obvious in the material. Encourage them to become detectives, using clues from their reading along with what they already know, to draw conclusions, make reasonable predictions, establish connections, and make critical and analytical judgments.
