Week 4: Explore the World of Technology, Introduction to Computers
1 What's Up?
This week, let's stop at the top of the Ferris Wheel and look out over the realm of technology. From this spot on top, you will have a panoramic (a wide view of a huge area) view of the digital world!

You are about to use parts of "The Journey Inside," an interactive voyage created by Intel that takes you into the world of technology. It is important to begin with module #1: Introduction to Computers because it contains important information for navigating the Intel site.

Ever wondered how many long-division problems a computer can complete in one quick second or how information really travels over the Internet? Is 56 Kbps faster than 1.5 Mbps? You're about to uncover answers to these questions and more. For the next 2 weeks, you will link to the Intel site to do things like interact with videos, take virtual field trips, and study close-ups of computer chips, just to mention a few.

2 Let the fun Begin!
Get ready to travel back in time and see the changes that have taken place in technology and the impact technology has had in your own home. Use the slider bar under the picture to move forward and back through time as you play the Technology at Home Interactive Game. Also, you can position your cursor over an object to reveal some information about that object.

Print and complete the fun sheet, Times are Changing!

3 MUYOM - Make Up Your Own Mind
Learn the history of computers and their components; how computers get pictures, words and sounds; how they store, process & deliver information; and how artificial intelligence compares to your brain with Intel's Module 1: Introduction to Computers, The Journey Inside.

At The Journey Inside, you learned that artificial intelligence is a field of science devoted to developing technology tools that someday may be able to reason and solve problems. What do you predict will be taking place in the field of artificial intelligence when you graduate from high school?

How do you define "smart?" Is it being able to think fast? (Computers have speed.) Is it having a good memory? (Computers have plenty of that.) Is it being able to make good decisions based on the facts we have? (Computers are only as good as the software designed for them.) Is being smart based on your ability to think original thoughts and form creative new ideas? (Computers are not capable of original thought.)
