What is a plug-in?

Plug-ins are software programs that enhance your browser, like Netscape or Explorer, in specific ways which allow you to do more things like view movies or listen to audio clips. Authors of the book, The Internet for Dummies, define plug-ins the Star Trek way: "…think of plug-ins as parasitic life forms that attach themselves to your browser and enhance its intelligence." (page 115)
