Week 19: Introduction to Databases

Homework for the Teacher

  • Schedule a trip to the media center with your school’s Media Professional for students to identify examples of print and computer databases.
  • Plan a tour of your school’s SIMS office and ask the operator to describe how this collection of records benefits everyone in the school.
  • Several statistical agencies provide special Web pages for kids. (And you thought stats were boring?)
  • Use the Landmark’s Raw Data page to link your students to Web sites containing statistical "real-world" data.
  • Let the"KnowPlay" database simplify your life with instant access to information on any topic. You’ll bookmark this site for the rest of your life!

Reading Strategy Spotlight
Drawing inferences in text is the process of combining what is read with relevant prior knowledge. Use this process to help students create meaning that is not necessarily obvious in the material. Encourage them to become detectives, using clues from their reading along with what they already know, to draw conclusions, make reasonable predictions, establish connections, and make critical and analytical judgments.
