Week
13: Introduction to Spreadsheets
Homework
for the Teacher
- As
you know, measurement is an area that tends to give fifth graders
some trouble on the End of Grade Test. For that reason, you
will have the opportunity to spend the next five weeks working
with students on the use of spreadsheets for understanding,
using, and converting standard units of metric and customary
measurement. The emphasis is not on learning spreadsheet software;
it is on using spreadsheet software as a tool to collect and
analyze data, explore "what if" statements, learn
content and much more. In the process, students will learn
basic spreadsheet terminology while using the tool to perform
calculations, observe results, and display data graphically.

Reading
Strategy Spotlight
Question! Have
students ask questions of themselves, questions of the authors,
and questions regarding the validity of text. Questioning is
fundamental to being alive. Questions help children formulate
beliefs. What questions do they have before they start to read?
What questions rise to the surface while they are reading? What
questions would they like to ask the author? What questions will
go unanswered?
