Week
10: Introduction
to Boolean Logic (AND),
Using Word Processing Skills
Homework
for the Teacher
- This
week and on through Week 12, your students will begin exploring
the use of search statements using Boolean operators. Learn
with your students and have fun with all the Serendipitous
Surprises you encounter along the way!
- The
student-centered Word Processing Activity under Step 3 (of
Weeks 10,11, and 12) is very important. Why? Find
out reason #1.
Reason #2: Your students will use what they
enter in this file as the foundation for real-world, high-interest
electronic research activities in forthcoming TechKnow Park lessons.
"
we've learned that helping kids find out who they really are---what
they are good at and what they love to do---is the most important way of maintaining
natural curiosity and an eagerness to learn. We need to stop drawing attention
to what kids can't do and start emphasizing what they can do." (Discover
Your Child's Learning Style, by Mariaemma Willis, M.S., and Victoria Hodson,
M.A.)
- How
does this fit in the Big Picture?
- If
you didnt
have time last week, take a few minutes to register (Its
free!) with "Teach
for Tomorrow." Go
straight to Module 7, Lessons 2 and 3:
Teaching Students Internet Search Skills & Using Internet Information. This
is an outstanding tutorial that doesnt take long to complete.
- Download & print
the nifty Internet
Search Tools Quick Reference Guide developed by the Florida
Instructional Technology Resource Center. It makes a great paper
bookmark, too.
Reading
Strategy Spotlight
Where's
the beef? Use conclusions about important ideas to focus
students' reading and help them exclude the "unessential." Often,
by pointing out what is unimportant, you help students to distinguish importance more
clearly. Ask them to read and think aloud about their mental
images as you guide them to distinguish between images that
are critical to understanding and those little details in images
that are interesting, but not essential to the purpose for reading.
Students can use sensory images to lose themselves in rich detail,
gain a greater depth in the reading, draw conclusions, and make
text more memorable. Engaging discussion can grow from disputes
over what is important. Let children work to defend their positions.
