Real Time

Something happening at the moment, live! Instant messaging and chat rooms are real time, while email may be delayed by minutes.

Upload

The process of sending information from your computer to another computer

Shareware

Software you can download and "try out." If you keep it, you must send the creator a fee.

Spam

Email that is sent out to a lot of people at once. It is many times junk email that you don’t want and probably didn’t ask to receive.

URL- Uniform Resource Locator

The address for a web page. Example: www.harnett.k12.nc.us

Virus

A program created to destroy or corrupt files or computer systems. It travels by email or shared lines and files.

VR Virtual Reality

Computer simulation that allows the user to interact with 3D graphics and / or animations.

Worm

A program that gets into your computer and copies itself over and over. It will continue getting bigger and bigger until it shuts down the computer.

EMAIL- Electronic Mail

Messages sent and received over the phone lines using a computer and modem

Cybrarian

A librarian that specializes in the Internet

Broadband

A high-speed connection to the Internet like a T-1 or DSL. It is much faster than a phone line.
