Week 16: Using Spreadsheets and Primary Source Materials
1 What's Up?
Expression AnimationFlip your imagination switch to the ON position and pretend that you entered a contest at the local mall to win a $1000.00 shopping spree at a toy store of your choice. Imagine the surprised look on your face when you’re called to the phone and told that you WON!

But wait! The surprised look on your face turns serious when you learn there’s a catch! You are informed that the total cost of all the toys you select must not exceed (go over) $1000.00, tax included. Also, the total cost of all the toys (tax included) must fall between $995.00 and $1000.00 or you lose everything.

"Not a problem!" you exclaim. "I have a secret weapon called a spreadsheet! I can make it do the math for me–right down to the very last penny! Show me the money!"

Print your "imaginary" $1000.00 check.

2 Let the fun Begin!
Spreadsheet Activity
Pick one of the online stores listed below and begin shopping! Print the order form and use column A (or notebook paper) to write down all the toys you want. Record the cost of each item in column B and how many you’d like to buy in column C. Ignore column D today. See the first three toys Josh selected at the Wal-Mart Toyland online store.

Primary Source Activity
Now it’s time to continue the study of primary source documents that began in Week 14. It is important to understand that information and ideas related to your research topic are influenced by prior knowledge, social, cultural, political, economic and historical events. (Information Skills Curriculum, Grade 5) In other words, learning how to use primary source materials will help you trace the history of your research topic or go back in time to see how it first began. For example, if you were researching sports cars, wouldn’t it be fun to look at pictures of the very first sports car and to find out how fast it traveled? All the Time Travel Missions in TechKnow Time Warp will help you learn to use primary source materials to trace the history of your research topic. So get ready to enter the TechKnow Time Warp and step back into a movie made in 1899. Check out the clothes that kids like you wore in the early 1900s! Listen to authentic early sound recordings!

When the Time Machine appears, roll your cursor over the red beam of light to reveal Secret Time Travel Mission #3, then click on the red light to begin the adventure. Let’s go!

3 MUYOM - Make Up Your Own Mind
Open your word processing file from last week to refer to the search statements you created a few weeks ago. Last week, you used a search engine in NC WiseOwl to gather information on your topic. This week, link to yahoo!kids and continue gathering information using their categories or subject directories. Review the differences between search engines and subject directories.

Don’t forget to store all the "cool things" you find with the with the rest of your Incredibly Inquisitive Collection of Curiosities.

While you’re reading about your favorite topic online, ask questions. Question the truth of what you’re reading. Find out who wrote the information. Focus on the topics listed in your word processing file and eliminate unimportant information. Ask questions like:

Do I agree with this? Why or not? Do I want to learn more about this? Who else would like to know this information? How can I share it?
How do I know this is true?
