Week 15: Using An Online Weather Spreadsheet/Using Primary Source Materials
1 What's Up?
Strap on your skates or grab your scooter. Today’s spreadsheet activities will keep you moving, talking, and smiling! One activity will have you racing to problem solve, while another will send you outside to gaze up at the sky. Don’t waste a minute! Move on to Step 2.
2 Let the fun Begin!
Spreadsheet Terms and Concepts
It’s time to play "Stump Your Buddy!" First, Study this Spreadsheet and answer the questions together as a class with your teacher. Next, take 3 minutes to think of a question you can ask a buddy about the spreadsheet. Be creative, but reasonable. Use at least 2 of the spreadsheet words you have learned. Review the spreadsheet vocabulary words.

Using an Online Spreadsheet
Hold on to your seats! Get ready to use an interactive online spreadsheet. (Principles and Standards for School Mathematics). It operates as a stand-alone applet. (Pssst… Click on the word "applet" to read its definition.) You will see how easy it is to collect data related to the weather and observe how the "summary data" changes. You can add real data from a local weather station or simply make up your own imaginary data for fun. Two IMPORTANT tips before using the spreadsheet:

  1. Click on the CLEAR button before entering data.
  2. Click on the CALCULATE button after entering new data. Notice which numbers change after entering new data. What does the summary data tell you?
  3. Click on the different TABS to view a bar chart or a scatterplot of your data.

Create a Spreadsheet to Enter and Edit Data
Let's have more fun with a weather spreadsheet that you create! Print this Local Weather Data Log, and then use it to record your very own local weather conditions for at least one week. When you link to “My Local Weather Data Log” there will be helpful tips, Web links and suggestions to make this activity easy to understand.

3 MUYOM - Make Up Your Own Mind
Last week you magically transformed the words in your list into exciting keyword searches. If you can’t remember, look at Kyle’s word processing file from last week.

This week you have the chance to give your own keyword searches a whirl with NC WiseOwl. Open your word processing file from last week to refer to the search statements you wrote. Quick tip: Print steps 1-5 before you link to the site.

  1. Go to www.ncwiseowl.org.
  2. Enter the "Elementary" section of NC WiseOwl.
  3. Select your favorite online multimedia encyclopedia and look for the search box.
  4. Type or copy and paste your own keyword searches (from your file) in the search box.

Did you find a container to store your Incredibly Inquisitive Collection of Curiosities? If not, pick your own container or ask a local pizza restaurant to donate clean pizza boxes to all the students in your class. If you didn’t have time last week, view and print a FUN cover to tape to the top of the container.
