Homework for the Teacher

  • Today’s focus is on the creation of graphs and charts from selected data on a spreadsheet. This is the last opportunity for your students to work with spreadsheets and primary source materials before moving on to databases next week.
  • There are free self-paced interactive tutorials available on the Web to acquaint you with the many uses of spreadsheets in the classroom. One example is "Using Excel in the Classroom" by Memphis City Schools.
    And Scroll down the page on Memphis City School's Online Practice Module Web site to find sample spreadsheets to download and use in class.There's a Fahrenheit to Celsius temperature converter, an M&M spreadsheet, a pizza calculator, and a trip calculator. Check it out!
  • Several other outstanding online tutorials can be found when you select "Tech Tutorials" in Kaleidoscope's Juke Box.
  • NC State University provides links to outstanding spreadsheet lesson plans with everything you need, just a mouse click away. Link to It’s TIME...Technology Integration Made Easy!, authored by Judy Lambert, and click on grades 4, 5, and 6.
  • Now is a good time to visit the NC 5th Grade Test Item Bank and print all the questions related to spreadsheet objectives 2.1, 2.8, and 3.4. Contact your local Media and/or Technology Director for the user name and password to access the item bank. Please retain the security of this test to maintain its validity.

Reading Strategy Spotlight
Question! Have students ask questions of themselves, questions of the authors, and questions regarding the validity of text. Questioning is fundamental to being alive. Questions help children formulate beliefs. What questions do they have before they start to read? What questions rise to the surface while they are reading? What questions would they like to ask the author? What questions will go unanswered?
