![]() Swing into your fifth grade year with a new attitude! Let's start by learning the first and most important rule to follow in TechKnow Park:
Why should you bury the "I CAN'Ts?" Positive thinking and good self-esteem are important because they give you the courage to try new challenges and the power to believe in yourself. They allow you to respect yourself, even when you risk trying something new and make mistakes. And when you respect yourself, adults and other kids usually respect you, too. This week you will also learn about the North Carolina WiseOwl Reference site. This tremendous site will be THE hangout for you and your friends as you investigate amazing topics this year. If you've never heard of NC WiseOwl, learn all about it! |

![]() HELP WANTED: Apply Inside to become a Web Tour Guide! (Grab a partner.) You are a Web Tour Guide interviewing a Web tourist. Ask your tourist about favorite games, books, hobbies, and foods. Armed with your tourist's data, visit a search engine like yahoo!kids, and simply type in one of the key words that relate to one of your tourist's interests. (Click and type in the box that appears beside the word "SEARCH.") For example, if you discover that your tourist is fascinated by hurricanes, type the word "hurricanes" in the search box and cruise the Net for interesting sites on hurricanes. In just a few short weeks, you will learn how to do more sophisticated searches.As a Web Tour Guide, you want to make sure that you take your tourist to sites that are easy to understand, easy to find your way around, believable, and interesting. Check to see that directions on the site are simple and clear. Check up on the person or organization in charge of creating the site. Are they trustworthy? How do you know? Would you feel safe taking other tourists to this site? Now switch roles and let the Tour Guide become the tourist. Search the Web using words or phrases that relate to all the things you like to do. |
